Cascading phase transformations in high carbon steel resulting in the formation of inverse bainite: An atomic scale investigation

Abstract: Atom probe tomography (APT) has been used to understand the redistribution of solutes during the isothermal cascading phase transformations from supersaturated austenite resulting in the formation of inverse bainite. Different cascading reactions resulting in the formation of inverse bainite, namely the cementite midrib formation, ferrite formation, secondary cementite formation, and the degenerated microstructure of inverse bainite have been studied in detail. Solute profiles across the different transformati… Show more

“…The fan-like inverse bainite formed at 648 K in the 4.12% Cr 0.88% C steel 29) and at 673 K in a high-carbon plain steel. 24) Since the conversion of the entire inverse bainitic unit to upper bainite, named the degeneration of inverse bainite is the final stage of the transformation, 30) it is possible that the formation of upper bainite (ferrite + M 3 C) structure is attributed to degeneration of inverse bainite.…”

“…12 A recent claim [197] that NP-LE is observed with cementite growth in ferrite is not justified. The atom probe composition-data are not of a sufficient resolution because the concentration distributions at the interface are too wide and there has been no effort to compare the experimental data against theory to demonstrate the existence of local equilibrium.…”
