Light-emitting diode (LED)-based visible light communication (VLC) is a great promising high-speed wireless access solution due to its low power consumption, no electromagnetic interference, large available bandwidth, and no authentication required. However, visible light cannot be used directly as an information source, and must be combined with other communication technologies to avoid becoming an information island. In hybrid power line and visible light communication (HPV) system, power line communication (PLC) can be used to deliver data to VLC transmitters. Multiple users can share the same time and frequency resources to provide higher spectral efficiency using non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) method than traditional multiple access method. Therefore, we investigate the power allocation strategy for a downlink of HPV system based on NOMA. Our goal is to maximize achievable sum rate of the HPV system while considering user fairness. To solve this optimization problem, we present an optimal power allocation (OPA) algorithm that finds optimal solution by transforming the non-convexity of the original formulated model into the convex programming. Numerical results show that the proposed OPA algorithm significantly outperforms the gain ratio power allocation (GRPA) and the fixed power allocation (FPA) algorithm in terms of the sum rate, and improves the fairness among users. After more than two decades since intensive research began on power line communications (PLC) technology, this interesting field of telecommunication engineering is still progressing towards maturity. Despite some factors that delay its worldwide acceptance, its implementation is starting to take off. Research in PLC is motivated (i) by many factors such as the crowded radio frequency spectrum that requires to be sustained by alternative technologies and (ii) by the emanation of other new technologies that may help PLC to extend its practical implementation such as visible light communications or other wireless communication technologies like near‐field communications. PLC technology is used in applications requiring both low and high data rate but traditionally exploited in applications in which the node does not move. Nowadays, PLC has become widely accepted; hence, a review of the technology may be useful to keep the readers aware of new updates. In this paper, we provide an overview of the evolution of PLC technology over the last few decades.

Telecommunication engineering may substantially benefit from the integration of power line communication (PLC) and visible light communication (VLC) technologies. This integration is enabled firstly by the ubiquitous nature of PLC and VLC infrastructures and secondly by the recent advances made in both technologies, and it will be effective with the knowledge of the cascaded PLC‐VLC channel. This paper reports on the spectral analysis and estimation of the dual channel for hybrid systems involving PLC and VLC technologies. The channels are statistically analysed using the nonparametric windowed Welch method. Experimental results giving varieties of simulated PLC‐VLC channel are presented. They show the influence of the number of taps (PLC side) and the line‐of‐sight and the non–line‐of‐sight gains (VLC side) on the PLC‐VLC frequency response. It also indicates that the cascaded channel is influenced by propagation distance and room area. We also show the influence of PLC and VLC channel parameters on the gain and notches.
