Cascaded PLC-VLC Channel Using OFDM and CSK Techniques

Abstract: This paper puts in Cascade the power line communications (PLC) channel and the visible light communications (VLC) channel, in order to use the PLC channel as backbone for the VLC channel. This combination is suitable for applications in which hybrid PLC-VLC systems are needed. We investigate the behaviour of the cascaded channels for a full link transmission. Quadrature phase shift keying combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (QPSK-OFDM) is used over the PLC channel and color shift keying (C… Show more

“…Furthermore, the PLC network has a high data rate, thus it is sufficient to support indoor data links [4]. Hybrid VLC and PLC channel characteristics were studied in previous work [5]- [8]. Considering the uniformity of illumination, there are usually multiple LEDs in a room, the resulting overlap of their emissions causes the interference of the VLC signals from adjacent LEDs, which, in turn, can severely degrade the performance of the VLC system [5].…”

“…The applications of PLC are not limited to the aforementioned areas as the technology has also been explored for in‐vehicle, in‐aircraft, in‐ships, and in‐trains communications, to mention only a few. Moreover, in the past 3 to 4 years, PLC has been investigated to be used as a backbone network for many other communication technologies such as visible light communications (VLC) . It can also be used as backbone for near‐field communications (NFC), which constitutes an open research topic.…”

“…Then, high‐frequency PLC noise is likely to affect the hybrid PLC‐VLC channel. The cascaded PLC‐VLC channel analysis was introduced in the work of Ndjiongue et al The aim is to achieve a cost‐effective transmission in a hybrid PLC‐VLC channel by not performing any demodulation in the bridge to analyse the influence of the cascaded linear channels on the orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing data symbol when it passes through the hybrid PLC‐VLC channel. Many other findings on cascaded systems involving PLC or VLC can be found in previous works .…”
