CAS Common Chemistry in 2021: Expanding Access to Trusted Chemical Information for the Scientific Community

Abstract: CAS Common Chemistry ( ) is an open web resource that provides access to reliable chemical substance information for the scientific community. Having served millions of visitors since its creation in 2009, the resource was extensively updated in 2021 with significant enhancements. The underlying dataset was expanded from 8000 to 500,000 chemical substances and includes additional associated information, such as basic properties and computer-readable chemical structure information. New use cases are … Show more

“…The release of the CAS Common Chemistry data set was heralded by many as a breakthrough for open science. Reflecting on my somewhat less enthusiastic personal reaction to this, I realized that my research career developed in an era where open chemical resources such as PubChem, , ChemSpider, and the Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) , already existed.…”

“…In many ways, the world is “opening” up again, with many colleagues going to their first “in person” conferences since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. A significant leap forward for open chemistry was made in 2021, with the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry embracing a hybrid model and releasing half a million chemicals as the CAS Common Chemistry set under an open license .…”

“…Corresponding studies of species conducted under specific conditions were manually extracted from PubMed and systematically reviewed; next, NP content variations were thoroughly examined, and the mechanisms underlying each variation were identified. Then, the data (such as NP and species) were reserved and presented on the NPcVar platform for visualization, fullly referenced by cross-linking to well-established databases. ,,, ,, Overall, NPcVar provides a valuable resource for understanding the relationship between species, factors, and NP content, and has the potential to improve the yield of high-value NPs and facilitate the development of new therapeutics.…”
