“…Finally, the number of tubules classified into each score of maturity was multiplied by its respective score, with the resultant values summed and then divided by 100, resulting in a "mean score". In adult animals (90 days), a more detailed evaluation of spermatogenesis was made in seminiferous tubules, classifying them into stages of I-VI, VII-VIII, IX-XIII and XIV, according to the number of generations of spermatids, presence of mature spermatids localized on the lumen border or secondary spermatocyte [32]. …”

“…Each animal was killed by decapitation 22 days after streptozotocin injection, and the right testis, epididymis, vas deferens and half ventral prostate were removed and fixed in Alfac fixing solution (80% ethanol, formaldehyde and glacial acetic acid, 8.5 : 1.0 : 0.5, v/v) for 24 h. After histological processing, 7 μ m‐thick paraffin sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. One hundred cross sections of seminiferous tubules per animal were randomly analysed in order to evaluate the relative frequency of stages I–VI, VII–VIII, IX–XIII and XIV of the germinal epithelium cycle (Ferreira et al. , 1967).…”

“…In order to determine the developmental stage of the germinal epithelium, 100 cross sections of seminiferous tubules per animal aged 41-61 days were analysed at random and scored as follows on the basis of the most advanced spermatid present in the epithelium: steps 1 to 8 of spermatid differentiation (score 2); steps 9 to 14 (score 4); steps 15 to 18 (score 6); fully mature spermatids in step 19 observed in small (score 8)) moderate (score 10) or maximal (score 12) amounts. The rate of the spermatogenic process in mature rats (91 days of age) was estimated by the relative frequency of stages I-VI, VII-VIII, IX-XI11 and XIV of the germinal epithelium cycle, identified according to Ferreira et al (1967).…”
