Carvedilol Improves Inflammatory Response, Oxidative Stress and Fibrosis in the Alcohol-Induced Liver Injury in Rats by Regulating Kuppfer Cells and Hepatic Stellate Cells

Abstract: AimTo evaluate the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and antifibrotic effects of carvedilol (CARV) in rats with ethanol-induced liver injury.MethodsLiver injury was induced by gavage administration of alcohol (7 g/kg) for 28 consecutive days. Eighty Wistar rats were pretreated with oral CARV at 1, 3, or 5 mg/kg or with saline 1 h before exposure to alcohol. Liver homogenates were assayed for interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level as well as for myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and malo… Show more

“…Hence, they suggested that certain cardiovascular drugs, including β-blockers, can reduce myocardial remodeling specifically via modulatory effects on cardiac fibroblasts 15 . Apart from its antihypertensive effect, Carvedilol, was proven for its anti-fibrotic activity 16 18 .…”

“…A large number of experiments have demonstrated that hepatopathy is strongly linked to inflammatory and oxidative stress (35,36). Under oxidative stress, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis are inhibited.…”

“…IL-10 reduces macrophage production of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen intermediates, and also reduces the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokines [140,141]. Thus, fractalkine (the ligand of CX3CR1) represents a negative feedback on the extension of liver inflammation through affecting KCs.…”
