Carton Set Optimization in E‐commerce Warehouses: A Case Study

Abstract: I n this study, a three-stage methodology for carton set optimization in e-commerce warehouses is proposed and evaluated on three DHL Supply Chain warehouses. The methodology includes order cubing, carton grouping, and optimal carton set selection. A modified largest area fits first algorithm for order cubing is proposed. For optimal carton set selection, a genetic algorithm with a novel crossover strategy is introduced. The results show that the proposed carton set optimization approach can improve the shippi… Show more

“…Ahire et al [224] developed a process to optimize the mix of carton size of a big distribution center, aiming to reduce shipping, material and labor costs. Also Singh et al [225] presented a model for carton mix optimization, applied to international LSPs. Freichel et al [226] investigated trends of packaging in OC, identifying three main areas: OC packaging design (protecting goods, customers satisfaction, sustainable solutions); packaging in the logistics process (efficient distribution, ship-from-store solutions); and packaging as an integrator between channels (universal packaging, integration of materials and information).…”

“…Several recent JBL articles have examined order fulfillment processes involving digital capabilities (Ambra et al 2020; Ballot et al 2021; Ishfaq et al 2021), inventory management approaches (Muir et al 2019; Singh & Ardjmand, 2020), and consumer responses to order fulfillment options (Nguyen et al, 2019; Tokar et al 2020). In this issue, Wallenburg et al (2021) contribute to this growing stream of research by investigating a challenging issue for firms—product returns.…”

“…Third, we shed light on which mechanisms are most likely to explain the potential wage gap. We examine two traditional logistics industries, truck transportation (Miller et al, 2021; Phares & Balthrop, 2022) and warehousing and storage (Autry & Daugherty, 2003; Keller et al, 2020; Singh & Ardjmand, 2020) to quantify potential wage gaps. These two industries represent the majority of the employment in the Transportation and Warehousing sector (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023).…”
