Cartilage T2 Assessment: Differentiation of Normal Hyaline Cartilage and Reparative Tissue after Arthroscopic Cartilage Repair in Equine Subjects

Abstract: Qualitative and quantitative T2 mapping helped differentiate hyaline cartilage from reparative fibrocartilage after cartilage repair at 1.5-T MR imaging.

“…Consistent with previous results in healthy knee [51,52], the mean TSD T2 value was 37.0 ± 6.8 ms. Because 95% of values should be smaller than (mean ± SD), 50 was chosen as the threshold above which T2 values were considered inordinately high. To quantify T2 mapping, a Poor Cartilage Index (PCI) was estimated as the percentage of T2 values larger than 50 ms. A PCI of 100 is the worst possible value, and a value near 5 is considered healthy.…”

“…The results of White et al 13 were encouraging. These investigators performed OAT and MFX in horses, and were able to correlate a zonal increase in cartilage T2 values from near the subchondral bone to near the cartilage surface to histology and collagen structural anisotropy, as assessed by polarized light microscopy.…”

“…11 In cartilage repair tissue, histologically validated animal studies report this increase in zonal T2 as an indicator of hyaline or ''hyaline-like'' cartilage composition. 12,13 The aim of this study was to evaluate if in vivo mean (full-thickness) as well as zonal (deep and superficial) quantitative T2 assessment in patients after MACT is capable to visualize the maturation of the cartilage repair tissue.…”

“…Several studies focused on evaluating cartilage repair using different animal models including sheep, horse and goat [13,[27][28][29] . A specialized characteristic of rodents and lagomorphs is that they possess auto-intrinsic repair of cartilage which is not present in larger animal and human [30] .…”
