Carrier Frequency Dependent Downlink Spectral Efficiency of Cellular LTE Deployments

Abstract: This paper explains a system level evaluation framework which allows performance assessment of cellular OFDMbased systems at different carrier frequencies. In the numerical examples we model the downlink transmission of an 3GPP LTE deployment.

“…In the first stage we categorize users on the basis of their velocity: pedestrian, urban and high-velocity user groups and perform feedback delay analysis of these groups. This categorization is generally followed in several wireless standards [5]. The main reason for categorizing the users for our study is to reduce feedback overhead while implementing our adaptive feedbackscheduler in a practical system.…”

“…Although the N-dimensional metric space is a rather straightforward concept, we believe that its importance has not been emphasized enough in the engineering community, perhaps partly owing to its perceived obviousness. An exemplary paper making use of N-dimensional efficiency analysis is the study of various system aspects of LTE in [7]; unfortunately such analyses are rather rare, both in the research literature and in particular in technical arguments put forward in the context of spectrum allocation debates and regulation.…”

“…4) as a means of explicitly articulating this relationship between engineering and policy. Our technology circle generalizes the seven-layer OSI network protocol stack by adding Layer Zero, the regulatory rules 7 that constrain what may be implemented at the networking layers, and Layer Eight, the business and social practices that are built on the network, and that inform regulatory decisions at Layer Zero.…”
