Carriage ofStaphylococcus aureusamong 104 healthy persons during a 19-month period

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to investigate the frequency of the nasal carrier rate of Staphylococcus aureus. The investigation was performed on 104 healthy persons. The total number of swabs performed was 1498 and this resulted in isolation of 522 S. aureus strains. All strains have been identified, tested for antibiotic susceptibility, and phage-typed. The carrier-index (number of positive swabs/number of total swabs for each individual person) was compared with different sampling and culturing methods, … Show more

“…Contrary to previous observation [20], gender seems to have no effect on the carriage rate and neither did it appear that certain factors such as "nose picking" are important predisposing factors to colonization in the populations analyzed in this study. Cespedes et al [9] however found that hospital staff have higher incidence of hand and nasal colonization with S.aureus and could serve a vectors of S.aureus transmission to hospitalized patients.…”

“…4 In healthy population, the nasal carriage rate S. aureus is 10% to 35% and this rate can be influenced by age, underlying illness, and the environment in which the person lives. 21 In our study, student nasal carriage rate of S. aureus was shown to be 18.4%. This result is comparable to previous studies from different countries such as Taiwan.…”

“…Although S. aureus can be transiently found in various locales on the human body, the major ecological niche is the anterior nares. In the human population, 20% are persistently colonized and the remaining 80% are intermittently colonized (1). S. aureus is a normal commensal organism of the human nostrils; however, carriage provides a staging ground for S. aureus to disseminate to other areas of the body where, once the physical barrier of the skin or epithelial surface is breached, distal infection can occur.…”
