Carpology of some East Asian Cardueae (Asteraceae)

Abstract: The present paper deals with the morphological, anatomical structure of achenes in the East Asian species of Rhaponticum, Klasea Serratula and Synurus. The structure of pericarp epidermal cells, mesocarp, has been described, as well as the structure of testa epidermal cells. The specific characters of the genera, as well as the identification characters of the species, are described.

“…6-9). This type of pericarp and testa structure has previously been reported by Häffner (2000) in some Carduinae and Centaureinae taxa, and by Zarembo and Boyko (2008) in some Cardueae genera (Rhaponticum, Klasea, Serratula and Synurus). Singh and Pandey (1984) reported an elongated and lignified testa structure in Centaurea moschata L. and in Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.…”

“…Thin epidermal cells and parenchymatic mesocarp have been reported in Rhaponticum Vaill., while both parenchymatous and sclerenchymatous tissues were found in the species of Klasea Cass. and Serratula L. by Zarembo and Boyko (2008). Mukherjee (2001) also mentioned sclerenchymatic braces and parenchymatic cell layers in the mesocarpic zone in the tribe Senecioneae.…”

“…Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has a vast application in solving many taxonomic problems among different plant geners (Köstekci & Arabaci, ; Schneider & Boldrini, ). Literature study reveals that SEM has a prominent role in the systematic investigation of micro‐ and macro‐morphological features (pappus, achenes) of Asteraceae (Abid & Qaiser, ; Martins & Oliveira, ; Zarembo & Boyko, )(Spjut, ).…”
