Carotid arteriosclerosis in identical twins discordant for cigarette smoking.

Abstract: From a nationwide twin panel, identical twin pairs with highest discordance in cigarette smoking were selected for a study of arteriosclerosis (49 pairs with a mean age of 52 years). Smoking history was obtained in 1975, 1981, and 1986. The mean life-long smoking dose of the smoking cotwins was 20 package-years. The smoking and nonsmoking cotwins had similar systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total plasma cholesterol level, body mass index, and some psychosocial factors; the only difference was found in u… Show more

“…A variant of this is when MZ twins are discordant for a certain "environmental" factor. Haapanen et al (1989) studied 50 pairs of MZ twins who were discordant for smoking, a major risk factor for CHD. Carotid artery atherosclerotic plaques were significantly larger in the smokers.…”

“…While we found a tendency for females to be more active in responding in some studies on subsamples in the Finnish Cohort, this has not been universally so. For example, in a study on smoking-discordant twins invited to participate in a clinical assessment of CHD risk factors and atherosclerosis, men had a higher participation rate than women [6]. Age-group …”

“…26 Therefore, the independent association between insulin sensitivity and IMT is yet to be de®nitely demonstrated in normotensive non-diabetic subjects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the ®rst study to examine this relationship in a population with a strict age range and unaffected by important cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, 27 impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes, stable hypertension, and familial hyperlipidaemia, that could be confounding the association between insulin sensitivity and the IMT.…”
