An organic agricultural system based on natural methods and means of production is an alternative to intensive agriculture. The available research suggests that organic crops, in comparison to the conventional ones, are richer in phenolics and other antioxidants while containing less undesirable pesticide residues and nitrates. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of polyphenols, lutein, vitamin C, and nitrates in eight potato cultivars (Mazur, Justa, Lawenda, Lech, Tacja, Laskana, Otolia, Magnolia) grown organically and conventionally in a controlled field experiment in Poland. Significant differences between potato tubers of the tested cultivars coming from organic and conventional production were identified for the majority of parameters. Higher concentrations of nitrates and lutein were found in conventional compared to the organic tubers, while organic potatoes were, on average, richer in phenolic compounds. Among the tested cultivars, Magnolia, Otolia, and Laskara were richest in vitamin C and phenolics. Otolia and Laskara also accumulated the highest levels of nitrates. If further confirmed, these observations might be of importance for the producers and consumers, who increasingly search for foods from sustainable and well-controlled agricultural systems.

The hazard of chemical pesticides on the environment is a worldwide problem. Finding ecofriendly alternatives to chemical pesticides is a recent trend in agricultural research, one of the best choices is essential oils (EOs). This study aims to manage brown rot disease of potato using EOs. In vitro, Seven of 16 EOs inhibited Ralstonia solanacearum. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value was determined on R. solanacearum growth, tamarind and vanilla EOs had the lowest MIC (1%). Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis indicated that the main components of tamarind EO (TEO) and vanilla EO (VEO) are propylene glycol (50.97 %) and vanillin (40.78 %), respectively. TEO had a stronger bactericidal effect than VEO when R. solanacearum incubated in a solution of MIC of both EOs. In the pots experiment, soaking potato slices (spunta cultivar) in 1% of each of TEO and VEO for 30 minutes significantly improved peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, chlorophylls and carotenoids, as well as, increased the plant height after 70 days of planting in comparison with the control treatment. Both EOs significantly decreased the disease rating from 4.2 in control treatment to 1.6 (TEO) and 2.2 (VEO). In addition to marked increments up to 36.11% (TEO) and 32.52% (VEO) in fresh tubers weight. After 60 days of tubers storage at room temperature, the two EOs decreased the infected tubers by 69.05% (TEO) and 47.17% (VEO). Generally, TEO showed better results than VEO. The growth inhibition of R. solanacearum and enhancement of physiological characters and yield of potato, encouraging the use of these two uncommon EOs as effective tools to manage brown rot disease of potato.

Growing environmental impact of conventional farming practices, gradually impacts soil structure and biological balance. This has forced the development of alternative practices to reduce and mitigate these effects. Types of fertilizers influence the quantity and quality of production. Following this idea, in 2016, in a crop of melon in a polyethylene tunnel, Lignohumat organic fertilizer was used, a granular humic product, which was applied during vegetation, in three stages and three fertilization doses: 100; 150 and 200 g/ha. Melon plants (Charentais variety) fertilized with Lignohumat at different doses showed positive results compared to the unfertilized variant. Results showed that application of the 150 g/ha dose significantly improved (P ≤ 0.05) the average number of fruits/plants, their average weight, fruit/plant production and the production/m2 but also the quality of fruits: soluble dry matter – 8.55%, total dry matter – 12.12%, reducing sugars – 3.40%, vitamin C - 21.12 mg/100 g, carotene - 36.42 mg/100 g f.m and antioxidant activity of 175.92 μMTE/100 g (ABTS method) and 228.16 μMTE/100 g (DPPH method). Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) 2.2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS). Significant positive correlations were identified for very importants parameters.
