The first ostracods known from the Lycian Nappes in southwestern Turkey are here reported, adding to the scientific understanding of marine ostracods during the Cordevolian, early Carnian, Late Triassic. The Karapınar Formation exposed at the Ağılıovası Yayla section yielded five species, including the typical Late Triassic Mirabairdia longispinosa Kristan-Tollmann, Nodobairdia mammilata Kollmann and Polycope pumicosa schleiferae Kozur. Their taxonomy is discussed and the ontogenetic development of Nodobairdia mammilata is described for the first time. In spite of the limited significance of this poor fauna for palaeoenvironment reconstitution, it points to a deposition in the offshore subtidal zone under moderate water depth, in line with previous interpretations. The palaeobiogeographical distribution of marine ostracods during the Late Triassic is updated and discussed. It implies that communication ways between the Palaeotethys and Neotethys oceans were already opened during the Cordevolian, slightly earlier than the Julian as previously proposed.

The present work investigates the significance of Late Triassic ostracods from the Yukon Territory, Canada, and adds to the scientific knowledge of the taxonomy of these organisms during the Norian, which remain poorly documented and understood. Fifteen limestone samples representing distinct marine palaeoenvironments cropping out at Lime Peak, Stikinia terrane, provided 90 species, including 9 newly described: Alatobairdia? sohni n. sp., Bairdia aksala n. sp., B. taan n. sp., B. yukonensis n. sp., Cornutobairdia yukonella n. sp., Lobobairdia whitella n. sp., Mirabairdia canadia n. sp., Hungarella limella n. sp., Leviella riedeli n. sp. Most assemblages point to neritic conditions in the photic zone. A similarity analysis demonstrates the distinct composition of reef-related and algae-related ostracod assemblages. The ostracod-algae associations in Lime Peak reveal that the affinity of Bairdiidae for algae (Dasycladaleans in the case of Lime Peak) was already established in the Norian. A faunal link is identified during the Norian between eastern and western Panthalassa and Japan, in line with studies on other taxa. The flux of species between eastern Panthalassa and Tethyan areas appears very unbalanced in the Late Triassic with most migrations originating from the Tethys. Further data from other Middle and Upper Triassic Panthalassan localities and stages (i.e. Ladinian and Carnian) are needed to confirm whether this apparent trend is due to sampling bias or reflects real dispersal fluxes.

A small yet occasional meal: predatory drill holes in Paleocene ostracods from Argentina and methods to infer predation intensity

Ostracods are common yet understudied prey item in the fossil record. We document drill holes in Paleocene (Danian) ostracods from central Argentina using 9025 specimens representing 66 species. While the percentage of drilled specimens at assemblage-level is only 2.3%, considerable variation exists within species (0.3-25%), suggesting prey preference by the drillers. This preference is not determined by abundance because no significant correlation is found between species abundance and drilling percentages. Seven methods were used, some of which are new, to quantify drilling percentages for the abundant and commonly drilled Togoina argentinensis. The resulting range, from 9.9% to 14.6%, suggests that drilling percentages are fairly insensitive to the method used, implying that comparisons across studies are possible. This information, combined with data from the literature, suggests the Cretaceous-Palaeogene mass extinction may have had a limited effect on drilling intensity in ostracods. The cylindrical (Oichnus simplex) and parabolic (O. paraboloides) drill holes from Argentina may have been caused primarily by naticid and possibly muricid gastropods. Two oval drill holes (O. ovalis) are morphologically similar to octopod drill holes, but their small size, the fact that extant octopods are not known to drill ostracods and the absence of such holes in co-occurring gastropods, preclude ascription to a predator clade. Drill holes are located preferentially in the median and dorsal regions, where most soft tissue, including the adductor muscle, is located. Drilled specimens are statistically taller than non-drilled specimens for T. argentinensis and larger predators selected larger ostracods. The drilling percentage does not significantly differ in ornamented ostracods.
