Caries reduction over 5 years from a singie application of a fissure sealant

Abstract: This paper is a continuation of three previously published papers giving a long-term clinical evaluation of an ultraviolet hght polymerizable fissure sealant method. The present findings revealed that of the 156 permanent teeth available for study 5 years after initiation, 59.696 retained the sealants in good condition, while 25.696 of the sealants were missing or partly missing. During the test period, 37 (32.2%) of the 115 sealed permanent first molars had become carious, while 92 (80.096) of the respective … Show more

“…The first report of the use of the acid‐etch technique to seal fissures dates from 1967 [1]. Several studies have since demonstrated that sealants are highly effective in caries reduction, especially if the sealant remains intact [2–6].…”

“…Additional studies reported retention rates of 50 percent at 48 months (13); 60 percent after 5 years (14); 85 percent after 24 months(l5); 72 percent at 54 months (16); 92 percent at 2 years (17); 63 percent after 23 months (18); 67 percent after 6 years (19); 97 percent at 2 years (20); 94 percent after one year in a Guatemalan public health clinic (21); Delton sealant in a Danish school dental service 40 percent after 6-7 years with caries reduction of 32 percent for girls and 25 percent for boys (22); and 85 percent at 2 years (23).…”

“…The cariostatic properties of resin sealants were associated with the long-term retention of these materials (1,2). In the literature a wide range (36-100%) of sigdkant caries reductions, depending totally on sealant retention, was reported (1,3,4). Glass ionomer cements have also been investigated in comparison with conventional resinbased sealants, and the results have been promising (5,6).…”
