Caries progression in 12‐to 16‐year‐old schoolchildren in fluoridated and fluoride‐deficient areas in Brazil

Abstract: These results suggest that water fluoridation reduces the rates of caries progression through the enamel and dentin, but the effect was more pronounced for lesions in the inner enamel than for those in the dentin.

“…Likewise, the likelihood of adults living in urban areas having 20 or more teeth was 23% greater (OR = 1.23; 95%CI: 1.09-1.39) than those living in rural areas ( Table 3). As for individual variables, the highest functional dentition rates were in younger individuals (35)(36)(37)(38)(39) …”

“…Several studies, also in recent years, evaluating caries diagnostic tests have used the κ coefficient for expressing intra-and inter-observer reproducibility [Ekstrand et al, 1997;Lawrence and Sheiham, 1997;Naitoh et al, 1998] but, to the knowledge of the authors, statistical testing of differences between κ values has not been done previously. The κ coefficient may obtain values between -1 and +1.…”

“…Of the 50% that progressed into dentine, 20% did so in 1.2 years [Mejare et al, 1998[Mejare et al, , 1999. In areas with water fluoridation, the progress rates of caries were slightly slower [Lawrence et al, 1997;Lith et al, 2002]. The distal surfaces of the lower first molar and upper second premolars are at higher risk for a relatively faster progression of caries from enamel to dentine [Mejare et al, 1999].…”
