Caries prevalence using ICDAS visual criteria and risk assessment in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: A comparative study

Abstract: Aims:To compare the dental caries prevalence using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and the caries risk by Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and normoactives (NAs). Methods and results: Sixty children and adolescents aged 6-12 years (30 CP/30 NA) were clinically evaluated by one calibrated examiner using two-digit ICDAS criteria and converted into components of dmf/DMF indices: d2mf2/D2MF2 (enamel and dentin lesions) and d3mf3/… Show more

“…Since, the different culture could influence the occurrence of dental caries by means of cariogenic food and oral hygiene practice, 29,44 the result from our study could not extrapolate for other population. Furthermore, the matched pairs observation of dental caries experience between Thai children with CP and healthy children should be conducted.…”

“…From Thai 5th National Oral Health Survey in 2018, which collected the dmft of both non‐cavitated and cavitated dental caries, the prevalence of dental caries in children 3 and 5 years old were 52.9% and 75.6%, respectively 28 . The Brazilian study in 2021 also showed the high prevalence of caries (include enamel and dentin caries) among 6–12 year children with CP was 92.3%, and the mean dmfs and dmft were 17.0 and 7.5, respectively 29 …”

“…The ICDAS criteria evaluate the non-cavitated and cavitated stages of carious lesions in more detail than the traditional DMFT index (sum of the number of Decayed, Missing due to caries, and Filled Teeth in the permanent teeth). Many studies have been conducted to prevent dental caries by early detection using ICDAS [16,17]. These studies have emphasized the significance of early caries detection before the initiation of cavitation, and therefore, ICDAS has garnered increasing attention for dental caries prevention in children.…”
