Caries, periodontal status and some salivary factors in lactovegetarians

Abstract: Twenty‐eight lactovegetarians as well as age‐ and sex‐matched controls were interviewed about their dietary habits, especially the frequency of ingesting acid fruits, drinks and foods, as well as their dental health habits. Samples of stimulated saliva were collected in connection with the clinical and radiologic study. Plaque, Gingival and Calculus Indices were not significantly different in lactovegetarians and controls. Of the lactovegetarians 76.9% and of the controls none had dental erosions on some tooth… Show more

“…Apart from a small case control study in Finland 19 showing a higher rate of dental erosions in lacto-vegetarians, probably because of consumption of acidic foods, there is no evidence to suggest that vegetarianism is detrimental to dental health 20,21 . “…The key determinants for dental decay include dental hygiene, intake of fermentable sugars and individual's susceptibility to the disease. Apart from a small case control study in Finland 19 showing a higher rate of dental erosions in lacto-vegetarians, probably because of consumption of acidic foods, there is no evidence to suggest that vegetarianism is detrimental to dental health 20,21 . Most of the current older population in Hong Kong were in the lower socio-economic classes when they were young and usually had minimal dental attention.…”

“…The flow rate and buffering capacity of whole saliva, but not the numbers of mutans group streptococci and lactobacilli, have been shown to increase following the transition from a mixed diet to a lactovegetarian diet in one Swedish study (5), whereas the stimulated salivary flow rate in lactovegetarians was lower than that in nonvegetarians in another Scandinavian study (7). A diminished salivary flow rate, generally seen in older individuals, could contribute to the relatively high rate of oral carriage of Candida in our study.…”
