DESCRITORES KEYWORDSPesq Bras Odontoped Clin Integr, João Pessoa, 9(3):381-388, set./dez. 2009Objeti vo: Realizar uma avaliação clínica longitudinal do periodonto de pacientes usuários de prótese parcial removível (PPR), comparando os pilares diretos de PPR dento-suportada com os de PPR dento-muco-suportada. Método: Parti ciparam da pesquisa 50 pacientes, com média de idade de 45 anos. Estes foram examinados no momento da instalação da prótese e após 3, 6, 9 e 12 meses, por um único examinador. Em cada exame foram verifi cados: recessão gengival (RG), profundidade de sondagem (PS), índice de placa (IP), índice gengival (IG) e quanti dade de mucosa cerati nizada (MC).Todos os pacientes receberam orientação de higiene oral, acompanhada de profi laxia e, quando necessário, foi realizada raspagem e alisamento corono-radicular. Para avaliar os desfechos com relação ao ti po de prótese no grupo pilar direto, foi feita análise a parti r do intervalo de confi ança. Resultados: A prótese dento-muco-suportada mostrou valores signifi cati vamente superiores de RG, IG e IP, enquanto signifi cati vamente inferiores de MC. Ao longo do tempo, os dois ti pos de prótese não apresentaram diferenças signifi cati vas do exame inicial para o fi nal para as variáveis RG, PS, MC e IG, enquanto o IP foi signifi cati vo somente na prótese dentosuportada. Conclusão: Os elementos pilares adjacentes a extremidades livres apresentaram condição periodontal menos favorável do que os pilares adjacentes a espaços intercalados, porém o uso de PPR não agravou a condição inicial, após um período de acompanhamento de 12 meses. Indicando que em um ano não se observa grandes diferenças entre os pilares diretos das próteses dento-suportadas e dento-muco-suportadas, o que sugere um acompanhamento profi ssional por um período mais prolongado. In each exam, the following parameters were verifi ed: gingival recession (GR), probing depth (PD), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI) e amount kerati nized mucosa (KM). Back ground: Removable partial dentures are an inexpensive mode of treatment to effectively replace teeth, but higher incidence of plaque, mobility of the teeth and caries is associated with them. Dental implants, that are long considered a standard of care in fixed prostheses, can improve the overall quality of restoration in partial denture wearers. Materials and methods: 50 partial denture wearers were studied to assess their attitude towards implant treatment. Correlation between oral hygiene status, age, gender and extent of edentulousness were also evaluated. Results: 19 out of the 40 patients were not willing for implant treatment. Significant difference (p=0.045) was seen between oral hygiene status of patients willing for implant treatment and those not willing. Conclusion: About 50% of partial denture wearers were unwilling to accept implant treatment. Within the limitations of the study it can be concluded that patient perceived higher cost of implants and less awareness about oral hygiene can be associated with unwillingness of removable partial denture wearers to opt for a implant treatment.
