IntroducciónLa sismotectónica es una especialidad científica de mucha significación para el planeamiento de obras industriales de gran magnitud y para la preservación de la vida humana. Puede asegurarse que los resultados de la correcta aplicación de sus méto-dos son decisivos para la mejor selección de las posibles áreas del emplazamiento de cualquier objetivo. Su utilidad fue reconocida por Gubin (1990) en un análisis histórico de las investigaciones sismológicas y geológicas con el fin de confeccionar mapas de regionalización sísmica. Ese autor en 1957 inició los debates, en el marco de la URSS, contra las «escuelas» geológicas y sismológicas establecidas, pero lamentablemente no fue hasta que con la ocurrencia de sismos catastróficos en áreas no consideradas en la regionalización sísmica de la URSS se dio paso, a fines de los 60, a la aplicación de la sismotectónica. De esta última, en el caso de la URSS, hay algunas variantes como la que se aplicó en Cuba .Varias han sido las vías para enfrentar la tarea sismotectónica, así como diferentes han resultado las técnicas desarrolladas (Bureau de Recherche Geologique et Mineres, 1981; Instituto Geográfico Nacional, 1992; Krestnikov, 1987;Spiridonov y Grigorova, 1980;Zhidkov et al., 1975). En este proceso surge la base teórico-metodológica general, la que se ha enmarcado en países de alto desarrollo por lógicas necesidades de preservación ambiental y economía; por lo que ha quedado establecido que el propósito central de estas investigaciones es la identificación, la delimitación y la caracterización de las posibles zonas sismogenéti-cas, que localizadas en una región pueden afectar fundamentalmente a un objetivo industrial e inclusive poblacional. Desafortunadamente no existe hasta la fecha una «receta» como algunas personas creen.
