Cari p 1, a Novel Polygalacturonase Allergen From Papaya Acting as Respiratory and Food Sensitizer

Abstract: Papaya has been reported to elicit IgE-mediated hypersensitivity via pollen inhalation and fruit consumption. Certain papaya sensitive patients with food allergy were found to experience recurrent respiratory distresses even after quitting the consumption of fruits. This observation prompted us to investigate the allergens commonly present in fruits and pollen grains of papaya. A discovery approach consisting of immunoproteomic detection followed by molecular characterization led to the identification of a nov… Show more

“…The cross reactivity was shown to be borne by polygalacturonase. Recently, the observation has been extended to the American mountain cedar [28], and a cross-reactive polygalacturonase was shown in papaya pollen and fruit as well [29]. Notably, the polygalacturonase protein family includes also the cypress pollen allergen Cup s 2/Cup a 2(source Allergome), and homologous allergensexist also in olive pollen (Ole e 14) [30], and Salsola kali [31] whereas plum, grapefruit, and lemon, are newcomers in this sense although the first belongs to the Rosaceae family and grapefruit and lemon are citrus fruits.…”

“…However, in case of OAS, the inflammation is usually restricted to the buccal cavity since the allergens are rapidly degraded by gastric enzymes upon ingestion and seldomly leads to anaphylaxis (Sarkar et al, 2018 ).…”

“…CD spectra were recorded as described in Ref. 42. The raw data in millidegrees were converted into molar ellipticity, and the folding patterns of the proteins were analyzed in CAPITO server (43).…”
