Caregiver burden in older adults with bipolar disorder: relationship to functionality and neuropsychiatric symptoms

Abstract: In this group of elderly BD patients, caregiver burden was more associated with symptoms frequently seen in others diseases as in dementia than with depressive, manic, or anxiety symptoms, which are often used as treatment outcomes measures goals in BD. Potential treatable and modifiable factors associated with caregiver burden could be caregivers' depression, anxiety, and medical comorbidities, as well as support for caregivers in terms of services and social relationships.

“…The sociodemographic and professional profile of the caregivers is similar to that identified in other studies in the literature (15)(16)(17) . The mean age of 47.82 years old was similar to Brazilian studies (15)(16)(17) . However, in international studies, the mean age diverges to around 60 years old (18)(19) .…”

“…The studied caregivers suffered a high burden; the mean score of Zarit burden scale was 55.20 ± 9.82. This rate is higher than that detected among caregivers of bipolar disorder patients in Brazil (32.0 ± 19) and in caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in Iran (51.73 ± 18.23) [ 28 , 29 ]. In contrast, the mean burden score was higher (64.51 ± 12.97) among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in South America [ 30 ].…”

“…We hypothesized that the distress of the married family caregivers during the patient’s crisis may lead to a decrease of the quality of life and/or the marital satisfaction of these caregivers. Nevertheless, investigations carried out in Brazil have focused on the burden of married family caregivers of patients with mental disorders, leaving a gap in the field of marital satisfaction and QoL [18,19,20]. It is also unclear which factors could improve QoL and marital satisfaction for them.…”
