Career Outcomes of Graduates of R25E Short-Term Cancer Research Training Programs

Abstract: The efficacy of short-term cancer research educational programs in meeting its immediate goals and long-term cancer research career objectives has not been well studied. The purpose of this report is to describe the immediate impact on, and the long-term career outcomes of, 499 medical students and graduate students who completed the CaRES (Cancer Research Experiences for Students) program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) from 1999 to 2013. In summer 2014 all 499 program alumni were located and… Show more

The outcome data we collected are presented in a separate publication [22]. …”

“…These goals might be as fundamental as providing students an opportunity to practice research skills to as specific as generating interest in becoming a palliative care researcher [27, 37]. Successful implementation of short-term impact surveys and longitudinal tracking surveys have been modeled by National Cancer Institute funded short-term cancer research training programs [40]. Our results suggest that most programs in Canada do not track resultant student publications nor do they follow-up with students after program completion.…”

“…In 1988 UAB’s Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program (CPCTP) for the support of a post-doctoral fellows, doctoral students, and a few summer students each year, was funded by NCI [12-14]. In 1999 UAB’s Cancer Research Experiences for Students (CaRES) program, a spinoff of the CPCTP for summer students only, was funded by NCI through its R25E program for short-term research projects [15-17]. The CaRES program’s primary goal is to introduce or re-introduce eligible students to cancer research and to motivate them to consider cancer research careers.…”
