Insight, academic major satisfaction and life satisfaction among college students majoring in education: Implications for career counselling

Theoretical explanations suggest that insight might increase life satisfaction by helping individuals choose a suitable academic major, indicating that insight might facilitate life satisfaction through academic major satisfaction. The current study thus investigates the mediating role of academic major satisfaction in the potential relationship between insight and life satisfaction. The data collected from a sample of 206 undergraduate students majoring in education degree programs confirm that the relationship between insight and life satisfaction is fully mediated by academic major satisfaction, with a model explaining 23% of the total variance in life satisfaction. The findings have important implications for the design and implementation of career counselling and guidance services provided within high school and university settings, particularly in countries such as Turkey where career counselling services need improvement.

Individuals with different sexual orientations may face various problems in society because of their sexual orientation or gender at birth. This includes individuals who classify themselves as "LGBTI+Q", i.e. "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual and queer". The aim of this study is to examine the impact of individuals' sexual orientation on their professional lives. In this study, which is based on the phenomenological design of qualitative research, a total of 15 participants (8 gay, 4 transsexual, 2 bisexual, 1 lesbian) were selected by snowball sampling method. In the survey, 6 personal information forms prepared by the researcher and 4 semi-structured interview questions were used. Semi-structured interview questions were interviewed with each participant for 30 minutes via video conferencing method over online (Zoom programme). The data were analysed by content and analysis methods. In order to ensure the reliability of the study, themes were identified in the process of analysing the data subjected to content analysis, and each theme was first divided into codes and then into categories and analysed within itself. The responses of 15 LGBTI+Q individuals participating in the survey regarding the effects of their sexual orientation on their professional lives were grouped under 4 themes, 21 codes and 8 categories. Each of the four themes was further divided into two different categories. According to the survey results, it was determined that sexual orientation affects career choice positively and negatively, sexual orientation can be revealed/hidden in business life, sexual orientation affects professional performance, and various problems may arise in terms of overlapping sexual orientation and career goals.

Qualitative exploration of career adaptability of Turkish adolescents

This article reports on a qualitative study that uses a phenomenological approach to investigate the differences between adolescents with high and low career adaptability levels, regarding adaptive strategies and needs. The sample included students categorized as above the 75th percentile and in the bottom 25th percentile according to their scores on the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale. The data were gathered from 20 high school students (12 male and 8 female) from Ankara, Turkey, using career construction interviews. A content analysis revealed that exploration (self and occupations), persistence, and inquisitiveness were frequently observed in the high career adaptability group. On the other hand, lack of persistence, lack of confidence, and emotion-focused problem solving were prominent in the low career adaptability group. The results suggest the need for career education programs in schools that promote confidence and problem-solving skills for Turkish adolescents, especially those low on adaptability.
