Cardiovascular Risk Factors of Taxi Drivers

Abstract: In Thailand, taxi drivers employed in the informal sector often experience hazardous working conditions. Previous studies revealed that elevated Hematocrit (HCT) is a predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. This study assessed factors associated with HCT in taxi drivers to predict their occupational CVD risk factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 298 male taxi drivers who joined a health checkup campaign in Bangkok, Thailand. HCT and body mass index were retrieved from participant health che… Show more

“…The obligatory nature of these medical check-ups provides an opportunity for early recognition of undiagnosed diabetes and to improve the patient’s adherence to medical recommendations. A diagnosis of prediabetes states should result in further diagnostic steps, health education and the implementation of preventive activities in the workplace, which are known to be effective [ 21 , 22 ]. Periodical prophylactic examinations of workers, therefore, can successfully fit in the modern model of active diagnosis of asymptomatic population diseases and thus give public health system benefits.…”

“…Also, the cross sectional nature of the study does not allow one to determine cause and effect. Lastly, the participants self-report of information may be inaccurately reported due to social desirability (e.g., reporting being physically active or eating fruits and vegetables), or embarrassment (e.g., under-reporting alcohol use) [58].…”

“…Exercise physiologists, sports medicine and rehabilitation researchers modified the Borg physical exertion scale to differentiate mental effort from physical effort in a wide range of work and sports activities . In an analysis of cardiovascular risk factors of this sample, taxi drivers with high perceived mental exertion were 2.6 times as likely to have a high cardiovascular disease risk profile . Additionally, perceived mental exertion was moderately and significantly associated with self‐reported low back pain in taxi drivers …”
