Cardiovascular Responses to Vibrostimulation for Sperm Retrieval in Men With Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract: Background/Objective: Cardiovascular abnormalities and arrhythmias are common in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) who are undergoing vibrostimulation for sperm retrieval. The study aimed to examine cardiovascular control in men with SCI undergoing this procedure. Methods: Individuals with chronic cervical (n ¼ 8; age: 33.1 6 1.9 years) and upper thoracic SCI (n ¼ 5; age: 35.2 6 2.9 years) volunteered for vibrostimulation, with continuous blood pressure (Finometer) and electrocardiographic monitoring. “…When reporting BP outcomes, some studies compared baseline BP and maximal BP, whereas others compared the BP changes. It is recommended to use BP changes as the primary outcome measure of AD owing to the fact that normal resting arterial BP in individuals with cervical and high thoracic SCI is approximately 15-20 mm Hg lower than in able-bodied individuals, 62 and thus elevated BP due to episodes of AD may not always be obvious.…”

“…9,[34][35][36][37][38] These studies expand our understanding of the neurophysiologic changes in sexual responses following SCI and provide an excellent model for a holistic and reintegrated approach to sexual rehabilitation. Furthermore, as evident from literature, individuals with SCI rate the recovery of sexual functions among their highest priorities for improving of quality of life.…”
