Cardiovascular remodeling and the peripheral serotonergic system

Abstract: Plasma 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin), released from blood platelets, plays a major role in the human cardiovascular system. Besides the effect of endogenous serotonin, many drugs targeting serotonergic receptors are widely used in the general population (antiobesity agents, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antimigraine agents), and may enhance the cardiovascular risk. Depending on the type of serotonin receptor activated and its location, the use of these compounds triggers acute and chronic effects. T… Show more

“…On the other hand, Trp hydroxylase facilitates the metabolism of ~5% Trp to 5‐hydroxy Trp, which generates 5‐HT by decarboxylase. Plasma 5‐HT released from blood platelets has been demonstrated to play a major role in the human cardiovascular system (Ayme‐Dietrich, Aubertin‐Kirch, Maroteaux, & Monassier, ). In the present study, our findings supported that the plasma concentrations of Trp, Kyn and 5‐HT and the ratios of Kyn/Trp as well as Trp/5‐HT might serve as the biomarkers for monitoring the initiation and progression of cardiovascular events such as acute myocardial infarction.…”

“…This, in turn, would result in an overexpression of 5-HT5A receptors as a compensatory mechanism to modulate the cardiac sympathetic neurotransmission in the diabetic state. Similarly, other studies have associated the cardiovascular damage and endothelial dysfunction present in diabetes with peripheral serotonergic alterations [20,21,24,[43][44][45], even changing other peripheral systems related with α-adrenergic, dopaminergic and histaminergic mechanisms [28,29].…”
