Cardiovascular Performance of Alaska Sled Dogs during Exercise

Abstract: Radiotelemetry was used to study regional blood flow distribution in Alaska sled dogs during cross-country runs. Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter transducers were chronically implanted on the coronary, renal, and mesenteric arteries, terminal abdominal aorta, and ascending aorta or pulmonary artery, and a miniature blood pressure gauge was installed in the aorta or carotid artery. Flow and pressure data telemetered from dogs running on the trail were received and recorded remotely. The heart rate, 40 to 60/min in … Show more

“…Here, the lowest hematocrit is 20% and maximal value for v/D is five times 0.565 which results in Pe = 18. This maximal value for v/D is chosen since for different species, the coronary flow can increase about five times for heavy work (Honig, 1981;Lochner, 1971;Van Citters and Franklin, 1969).…”

“…It is worth noting that the heart rates reached at the time of the circumflex arterial occlusion (198 + 22 to 211 ± 17 beats/min for the control and postinfarction dogs) rep-796 resent 70% of maximum heart rate for dogs. 17,18 As an example, the heart rate reached by postinfarction patients during a normal and necessary physical activity such as sexual intercourse is 117 ± 14 beats/min, 9 which corresponds to 65% of maximum heart rate for healthy men.…”

“…Heavy exercise was the level of exercise necessary to achieve heart rates greater than 220 beats/min. Mean (1)(2)(3)(4). Heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and mean left atrial pressure were measured directly from the recording during rest and each level of exercise.…”

“…Received for publication 12 June 1974 and in revised form 29 August 1974. ercise (1)(2)(3)(4), regional myocardial blood flow has not been measured previously during exercise. Since perfusion of the subendocardial myocardium occurs principally during diastole, uniform transmural myocardial perfusion requires a gradient of coronary vascular resistance during diastole with resistance lower in the subendocardium than the subepicardium.…”
