“…Among the animal models which hyperlipidemia has been experimentally induced, the rat has been the object of particular interest because of its omnivorous dietary habits (Wissler et al, 1954;Naimi et al, 1962). Data show that exposure of animals to a high fat diet for 120 days leads to development of hyperlipidemia and/or atherosclerosis as evidenced by significant increases in lipid profiles.…”

“…By the addition of saturated fat to this type of diet, Thomas and Hartroft (4) were able to show that myocardial infarction could be produced even if the vitamin D was omitted. A number of other authors have published data on blood coagulation in similar animals (5,6,7,8); from these studies it is fairly certain that a marked elevation of many coagulation factors was present in these rats. It has been postulated that a "hypercoagulable" state is an important factor in the genesis of the infarcts (9) .…”
