Cardiovascular Knowledge Among Urban American Indians and Alaska Natives: First Steps in Addressing Cardiovascular Health

Abstract: Background-Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is common among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs). Given limited access to health care, urban AI/ANs may be at particular risk. Lack of available data, however, limits our understanding of cardiovascular health in this population.

“…It is also heartening to observe that our population has higher knowledge of CVD signs and symptoms compared to the general population of Pakistan [ 10 ] and Nigeria [ 18 ]. Though the knowledge level reported from the rural/non-rural Americans [ 12 ] and Singaporeans [ 11 ] was very high, the CVD awareness of our sample was more comparable to that of American Indians and Alaska natives [ 19 ]. Analogous to our observations, older respondents and females in Kuwait were found to be more knowledgeable than the other subgroups [ 13 ].…”

“…One specific area of concern is knowledge about CVD, which has been shown to be restricted in AI/ANs. For instance, AI/AN knowledge of heart attack and stroke symptoms was more limited than that of the general population [ 91 ]. Although they understand the risk of obesity and importance of physical inactivity in CVD development, they are unable to tell what blood pressure values would be considered high [ 91 , 92 ].…”

Although they understand the risk of obesity and importance of physical inactivity in CVD development, they are unable to tell what blood pressure values would be considered high [ 91 , 92 ]. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) developed the Honoring the Gift of Heart Health (HGHH) curriculum to focus on improving the HL level of AI/AN communities.…”

“…Recent research has shown that Native Americans are aware of their risk for heart disease and stroke [24,25]. However, a small, recent study among Native Americans in the urban southwest, provided preliminary evidence suggesting that awareness of heart attack and stroke symptoms was lower than that of the total US population [26].…”
