Cardiovascular health awareness and the effect of an educational intervention on school-aged children in a rural district of India

Abstract: Awareness of CVD and its risk factors was far from optimal among the adolescent school-aged children in this study. A school-based educational program may help improve awareness of CVD and reduce the future disease burden in the community. The results of this study may be useful in formulating a nationwide school health program to deal with the emerging epidemic of CVD in countries such as India.

“…This knowledge will inform individuals on healthy attitudes to adopt [ 8 , 9 ] and to be proactive in reducing their own lifetime risk by plummeting their exposure to modifiable risk factors for CVD [ 10 , 11 ]. Studies have assessed the knowledge of adult populations regarding CVD [ 12 15 ], and even among school children [ 16 ], however studies from Africa are scant and concentrate on specific populations such as primary care physicians in western Cameroon [ 17 ], slum dwellers in Nairobi [ 18 ], and university staff and students in Nigeria [ 19 ]. Studies around CVD and its risk factors in sub-Saharan Africa have similarly shown some variation in the distribution/affection across genders [ 20 ].…”

“…Core abilities were developed in students and teachers about HL to empower their health [18]. A school based study revealed that a single, simple and least costly educational intervention can enhance preventive strategies among young adolescents and identified the best time to intervene have not yet started [19]. A randomized intervention study highlighted that counseling on screening and emphasis on lifestyle modifications had long lasting effects on physical activity [20].…”

“…Findings of this study have clearly indicated that students got sensitized about various CVD indicators. Across the globe, studies prove poor HL regarding CVD among populations which was subsequently improved by health interventions [15, 16, 19]. This study was a minor step to fill the knowledge gap among students, but there is a constant need to promote health literacy in every section of community to get better health outcomes.…”

“…There are many reports which are focusing mainly on children's and adolescents’ weight perception and nutrition knowledge, while very few are assessing more aspects of the CVD risk factors, such as smoking, hypercholesterolemia, or hypertension. [ 21 22 23 ] No golden standard exists for the external validation of the scale with the level of knowledge and attitudes toward CVD risk factor. However, although the choice of the items of the scale was not based on discriminant analysis, the content validation process which was performed by an expert committee and the large original items’ repository which was used reassure for the appropriate choice of the scale items.…”
