Cardiovascular disease in women with polycystic ovary syndrome at long‐term follow‐up: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract: At long-term follow-up, a history of nonfatal cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors including diabetes are more prevalent among women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Morbidity and mortality from of coronary heart disease among women with polycystic ovary syndrome is not as high as previously predicted. This finding challenges our understanding of the aetiology of coronary heart disease in women.

“…The risk of type II diabetes (T2D) in women with PCOS is approximately twice that of age-and BMI-matched controls. 2 Although the aetiology of PCOS remains poorly understood, hyperinsulinaemia clearly plays an important role. Measures that reduce insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia improve both the metabolic and reproductive features of PCOS.…”

“…Recenti studi hanno dimostrato un incremento della prevalenza di CDV in donne con PCOS [14][15][16][17]. Infatti nella PCOS è stata dimostrata disfunzione endoteliale [18) e diastolica [19] ed è stata associata sia ad elevati livelli di androgeni che ad insulino-resistenza.…”
