Cardiovascular Complications of Cancer Therapy

Abstract: In this second part of a 2-part review, we will review cancer or cancer-therapy associated systemic and pulmonary hypertension, QT-prolongation, arrhythmias, pericardial disease, and radiation-induced cardiotoxicity. This review is based on MEDLINE literature search, published clinical guidelines, and best practices in major cancer centers. Newly developed targeted therapy can exert off-target effects causing hypertension, thromboembolism, QT-prolongation and atrial fibrillation. Radiation therapy often accele… Show more

“…Besides, long-term chemotherapeutic toxicity results in cardiac diseases and may trigger secondary cancer such as marrow neoplasm or leukemia [36,37]. Chemotherapy-linked cardiotoxicity is another major setback of cancer therapy that increases the mortality rate because of the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in cancer patients [38].…”

“…Cancers 2020, 12, 704 4 of 24 Cardiac complications represent unresolved and potentially life-threatening conditions in cancer survivors, thus compromising some favorable benefits of modern cancer treatments and, consequently, representing a challenge for clinicians and patients [17]. Early detection and prevention of cardiotoxicity, as well as understanding of the multifactorial interaction among the selected chemotherapeutic regimen, traditional cardiovascular risk factors and individual susceptibility are urgently needed to optimize treatment options and reduce cardiotoxicity [18]. In response to ongoing clinical challenges, recently, personalized medicine and the new interdisciplinary area of cardio-oncology, focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and management of cardiovascular complications associated with the treatment of malignancy, have been useful in developing new safer therapeutic strategies [17].…”
