Cardiorespiratory fitness in late adolescence and long-term risk of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis among Swedish men

Abstract: Background Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease and psoriatic arthritis is a common coexisting condition. Cardiorespiratory fitness is the overall capacity to perform exertion exercise. Low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with negative health outcomes. Individuals with psoriasis have lower cardiorespiratory fitness compared with individuals without psoriasis. There are no previous studies exploring the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and new-onset psoriasis and psoria… Show more

“…It should be noted that their analysis adjusted for BMI, however only young adolescent men were enrolled. 39 A Japanese prospective survey study of 487,835 patients, of which 2793 (0.57%) developed moderate-severe psoriasis, also showed that not exercising for at least one hour per week was associated with developing moderate-severe psoriasis (HR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.05–1.22). 40 Another large prospective study by Frankel et al of 86,665 females found an inverse relationship between overall physical activity and the risk of developing psoriasis (RR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59–0.89) between the most active and least active quintile.…”

“…For example, one national cohort study targeting Swedish military conscripts included approximately 1.5 million enlisted in 1969. CRF and muscle strength, measured at the time of admission, were used as exposure variables, and associations with various health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes 4) , hypertension 5) , atrial fibrillation 6) , heart failure 7) , cancer and cancer-associated mortality 8,9) , disability [10][11][12] , sleep apnea 13) , psoriatic arthritis 14) , and migraine 15) were described. Recently, associations with the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 have also been reported 16) .…”
