Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: update, controversies and new advances

Abstract: Cardiopulmonary arrest is a medical emergency in which the lapse of time between event onset and the initiation of measures of basic and advanced support, as well as the correct care based on specific protocols for each clinical situation, constitute decisive factors for a successful therapy. Cardiopulmonary arrest care cannot be restricted to the hospital setting because of its fulminant nature. This necessitates the creation of new concepts, strategies and structures, such as the concept of life chain, cardi… Show more

“…It is important to point out that this study was carried out under the guidelines from 2000 (4,9) , and according to the new guidelines, the correct location is on the lower half of the sternum (17) . The indicated frequency per minute for the performance of ETC is 100 times per minute (3,9,12,(16)(17)(18) . In this research, almost 65% of respondents were not able to provide an answer to that question, and 35.3% said they were knowledgeable of the frequency.…”

“…The main aspects to be observed in the compressions are frequency, depth, return of the chest with each compression and minimum interruption (19,21). The frequency per minute indicated for performing compressions is 100 times per minute (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28) and the compression-to-ventilation ratio is given by 30:2 in adults (19,21). In this research, 86.8% knew how to establish the appropriate frequency.…”
