Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with supramaximal verification produces a safe and valid assessment of V̇o2max in people with cystic fibrosis: a retrospective analysis

Abstract: Given the clinical importance of aerobic fitness in people with CF, incorporating S is recommended to provide a safe and valid measure of V̇O in children, adolescents and adults who span the spectrum of CF disease severity.

“…The main outcome of aerobic capacity is the peak oxygen uptake (VO 2 peak), defined as the maximum amount of oxygen that can be absorbed during exercise . Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is considered the gold standard for the assessment of physical fitness, evaluating the interaction of cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic systems . However, the performance of CPET is still not available in many CF centers due to the need of high cost equipment (treadmill or cycle ergometer and a gas analysis system) and highly trained staff.…”

“…After an incremental CPET, participants will be provided with a ten-minute break. They will then be asked to complete a supramaximal exercise test (Causer et al, 2018, Saynor et al, 2013 whereby participants will exercise at 110% of their power output (as determined by CPET test previously). This test has been conducted amongst PWCF previously and has been deemed safe and ensures validity of the results which are obtained in a CPET test.…”
