Cardioprotective Effects of Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Juice in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease

Abstract: Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of pomegranate juice in patients with ischemic heart disease. One hundred patients, diagnosed with unstable angina or myocardial infarction, were randomly assigned to the test and the control groups (n = 50, each). During 5 days of hospitalization, in addition to the conventional medical therapies, the test groups received 220 mL pomegranate juice, daily. During the hospita… Show more

“…Along the same lines as our results, investigations have reported pomegranate antioxidant potential as evidenced by decreased MDA and increased serum total TAC . Likewise, the anti‐inflammatory effect of pomegranate has been shown by reduction of C‐reactive protein and IL‐6, with the latter being an inflammatory biomarker with the maximum predictive value for ESRD outcome .…”

“…In this study, the markers of oxidative stress showed remarkable declines due to pomegranate treatment. Similar results have been reported by other researchers under in vivo conditions (Dong et al, ; Jadeja et al, ) including a clinical trial performed by our team (Razani et al, ). The current study, however, did not investigate the mechanism behind the increased NO levels.…”

“…In another study, pretreatment of rats with Pg for 30 days reduced the markers of cardiac damage and lipid peroxidation and attenuated the infarct size following isoproterenol‐induced myocardial infarction (Jadeja, Thounaojam, Patel, Devkar, & Ramachandran, ). Consistent with the reports in animal studies, we showed in a clinical trial that 5 days of treatment with Pg caused a significant reduction in serum TnI of patients hospitalized for myocardial infarction (Razani et al, ).…”

“…underlined that punicalagin, contained in pomegranate arils, can inhibit neuro‐inflammation related to Alzheimer disease. Moreover, it was reported that pomegranate juice (PJ) exhibits protective effects against lipid oxidation, along with anti‐inflammatory, cardio‐protective, antimicrobial and anti‐infective activities . Several authors reported also a capacity to reduce the concentration of circulatory cytokines and other inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes .…”
