Cardioprotective effects of Ferulic acid against various drugs and toxic agents

Abstract: Background Homeostatic regulation of cardiomyocytes is indispensable in maintaining the normal physiological activity of cardiac tissue. Cardiotoxicity induced by drugs may lead to cardiac abnormalities such as arrhythmia, myocardial infarction and myocardial hypertrophy. Moreover, drug-induced cardiotoxicity confines the additional use of the implicated drugs. Several studies have reported that consumption of phytochemicals on regular intervals shall protect humans against numerous diseases su… Show more

“…Likewise, Teixeira-Guedes et al 70 reported high ferulic acid in the extract from germinated cowpeas for 5 days. These bioactive acids have been documented to regulate and suppress reactive oxygen species-mediated pathological conditions 64 , 71 . More recently, improved lipid profiles and a consequent significant decrease in oxidised low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, oxidative stress, and inflammatory biomarkers were the outcomes of administering a ferulic acid capsule (500 mg twice daily for 6 weeks) to hyperlipidemic patients 65 .…”

“…Ferulic acid (FA) ([E]−3-[4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl] prop-2-enoic acid) is a phenolic compound commonly found in some fruits ( Lorigooini et al, 2020b ). Numerous pharmacological properties have been reports for FA counting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, anxiolytic cardioprotective, neuroprotective and antidiabetes effects ( Nile et al, 2016 , Zheng et al, 2019 , Pandi et al, 2022 , Dong and Huang, 2022 ). It has been determined that FA through its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties exerted nephroprotective effects in cyclosporine-induced nephrotoxicity in rats ( Ghasemi-Dehnoo et al, 2023 ).…”

“…It rarely occurs in a free state and is typically conjugated with mono, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, polyamines, and lipids. Multiple studies have shown a wide range of biological effects by FA against clinical conditions, including, cancer, diabetes, lung, and cardiovascular diseases [ 108 , 152 , 153 ]. It also shows hepatic, neuro, and photoprotective effects.…”
