“…Aunque su patogenicidad es baja, son causantes de 1-3% de las endocarditis 2 afectando a pacientes con válvulas dañadas o protésicas en un curso típicamente insidioso que se traduce en una latencia diagnóstica de uno a tres meses. Se han comunicado aproximadamente 100 casos de endocarditis por C. hominis y sólo uno de pericarditis 4,5 . Cardiobacterium hominis se caracteriza por ser un patógeno infectante de curso crónico, con hemocultivos habitualmente negativos por su crecimiento lento 6,7 . Aunque tiene una buena susceptibilidad a penicilina 8 , se han aislado cepas productoras de betalactamasas, por lo que las cefalosporinas de tercera generación, como ceftriaxona, son actualmente los fármacos de elección 9,10 . De los miembros del grupo HACEK, C. hominis produce casi exclusivamente endocarditis, a diferencia de los otros microorganismos que producen infecciones gastrointestinales, ginecológicas, dentales, hepáticas, oftálmicas, óseas, etc.…”
