“…We demonstrated the absence of convincing scientific proof of potential correlation between the presence of cardiac TCs and both disorders. Moreover, we showed that the citing articles often took certain implied discussions/conclusions from original articles in the field and considered them to be objective proof of the role of cardiac TCs in either atrial fibrillation or myocardial infarction [Hostiuc et al, 2018a. Therefore, the potential role of these structures in various cardiac pathologies was questioned.…”

“…In a couple of recent articles [Hostiuc et al, 2018a, we have re-reviewed the potential roles of cardiac TCs in both atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction, as presented/implied in various original research articles. We demonstrated the absence of convincing scientific proof of potential correlation between the presence of cardiac TCs and both disorders.…”

“…It has been reported that telocytes are present in many layers of the heart, (Bani et al, 2010; Popescu et al, 2010; Rusu et al, 2017; Yang et al, 2014; Zhou et al, 2015), with more cells in the atria than in the ventricles and in the subepicardium than the endocardium (Liu et al, 2011). Telocytes give immunopositive reactions with many immunostaining markers, such as c‐kit, CD34, PDGFR‐α, PDGFR‐β, vimentin, EGFR, tau, SMA, S100, connexin, caveolin, and sca‐1 (Chang et al, 2015; Hinescu et al, 2006; Hostiuc, Marinescu, Costescu, Aluaș, & Negoi, 2018; Suciu et al, 2010; Zhou et al, 2015). In some studies, only the CD34 or c‐kit immunopositive cells were accepted as telocytes (Hostiuc et al, 2018; Nour, Sarhan, Mazroa, & Gawish, 2017).…”

In some studies, only the CD34 or c‐kit immunopositive cells were accepted as telocytes (Hostiuc et al, 2018; Nour, Sarhan, Mazroa, & Gawish, 2017). However, it has been reported that double immunostaining should be performed to separate telocytes from other cells, due to their wide immunophenotypic characteristics (Cretoiu & Popescu, 2014; Sheng et al, 2014; Suciu et al, 2009; Zhou et al, 2015).…”

“…Telocytes have also been repeatedly described in the muscle tissue [40], with the bulk of attention focused on the myocardium. Interestingly, their function in the heart was shown to be considerably different from that of telocytes in other organs [41,42,43]. Recent research indicated that the subepicardial layer of the heart contains cardiogenic stem cell niches.…”
