Cardiac screening by STIC: can sonologists performing the 20‐week anomaly scan pick up outflow tract abnormalities by scrolling the A‐plane of STIC volumes?

Abstract: Objective To assess whether medically qualified sonologists with low-to-intermediate scanning experience are able to detect major abnormalities of the outflow tracts by reviewing the A-plane of cardiac volume datasets acquired with spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC). Methods

“…70,7274 Bennasar et al used the multiplanar view to analyze STIC volumes of normal and abnormal fetal hearts, and reported an overall sensitivity, and specificity of 94.9% (166/175), and 88.1% (141/160), respectively. 72 STIC volumes had been acquired with both gray-scale and color Doppler information.…”

“…Moreover, there are previous experiences on the fetal heart showing how a single 2-hour briefing can be sufficient to teach sonographers with less experience how to assess outflow tract views from cardiac volumes [20]. In the future, virtual computer-assisted diagnosis technology may allow the automatic extraction of standard fetal brain views as it is already available for the fetal heart [21,22].…”

“…The grayscale volume can be associated to the color Doppler mode, and post-processing such as the inversion mode and B-flow imaging 8,17 . The advantage of the STIC over dimensional echocardiography is that this method is less operatordependent, allowing the identification of abnormalities in the outflow tracts of the fetal heart by examiners with little to intermediate experience 18 . …”
