Cardiac Lymphoma

Abstract: Lymphoma of the heart and pericardium may develop in up to 25% of patients with disseminated nodal disease, but primary cardiac lymphoma is rare. The majority are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, which arise in immunocompetent older individuals, men twice as often as women. Subsets are found in immunocompromised patients, including those with HIV-AIDS or allograft recipients. Cardiac lymphomas tend to arise in the wall of the right heart, especially right atrium, with contiguous infiltration of epicardium and p… Show more

“…Intracardiac masses as part of lymphoma are even more unusual, but may occur in disseminated disease (6); cardiac involvement is seen in 10 -15 % of cases of advanced disease upon postmortem (7,8). The right side of the heart is overrepresented in such cases, and the atria are overrepresented compared with the ventricles (6,9). Multiple chambers are usually involved, as in our patient (10,11).…”

“…Primary cardiac lymphoma rarely occurs and accounts for 1.3% of primary cardiac tumors and 0.5% of extranodal lymphomas, the right atrium is most common location, and diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL) is usual form [1][2][3][4].…”

“…The incidence of primary cardiac lymphoma is thought to be increasing in recent years due to access to advanced imaging modalities and surgical techniques. Cardiac lymphomas preferable involve the right side of the heart, especially the right atrium [13]. Clinical manifestation reflects the anatomical site and includes arrhythmias, heart failure, angina/chest pain, vena cava superior syndrome, etc.…”
