Cardiac hypertrophy and telemetered blood pressure 6 wk after baroreceptor denervation in normotensive rats

Abstract: We investigated cardiac morphometry 6 wk after sinoaortic baroreceptor denervation (SAD) in Long-Evans rats. SAD (n = 19) was associated with an 11% increase in the weight of the left ventricle (LV) plus septum (P < 0.001) and a 39% increase in that of the right ventricular (RV) free wall (P < 0.001), relative to sham-operated rats (n = 18). RV wall thickness was significantly increased in SAD animals, but there was no difference in the LV wall thickness and volumes of the RV and LV between groups. Constrictor… Show more

“…9,10 However, in normal rats with intact baroreceptors, BP varies within a relatively narrow range 10 -12 ; therefore, it is not known whether the kidney is able to cope with transient large fluctuations of BP, such as those occurring spontaneously in the sinoaortic baroreceptor-denervated (SAD) rat. [11][12][13][14] In the present study, RBF and BP were simultaneously recorded during long periods of spontaneous activity in conscious SAD rats. Rats were studied 2 weeks after surgery, ie, in the early chronic phase of denervation, when mean levels of BP are nearly normal and BP variability is markedly increased.…”

“…At 12 weeks, rats underwent the bilateral SAD according to the procedure described previously by Krieger 22 and van Vliet et al 23,24 At 18 weeks (6 weeks after the SAD operation), rats underwent the implantation of a BP radiotelemeter (model TA 11 PA-C 40, Data Sciences International). Seven days after the telemeter implantation (19 weeks), 24-hour BP and heart rate were monitored in unrestricted, conscious rats.…”

“…Accordingly, in the present study, we investigated whether the angII system-mediated inflammation would be involved in the mechanism underlying the large BPV-induced aggravation of hypertensive remodeling. For this purpose, we created a rat model representing chronic hypertension with exaggerated BPV by performing bilateral sinoaortic denervation (SAD) [22][23][24] in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). …”

“…Modified from Eto et al 16 Circulation Journal Vol.73, December 2009 includes ablation of the aortic depressor nerve and superior laryngeal nerve, resection of the superior cervical ganglia and cervical sympathetic trunks, and denervation of the aortic and carotid sinus baroreceptors. [20][21][22] Sympathetic nerve activity is transiently increased soon after SAD and activation wanes within a couple of weeks. Seven weeks after the SAD operation, the circulating and myocardial norepinephrine levels were similar in WKY with sham operation (WKY+ sham), WKY with SAD (WKY+ SAD), SHR with sham operation (SHR + sham) and SHR with SAD (SHR + SAD).…”
