Cardiac hydatid cyst in a child: Diagnostic value of echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Cardiac hydatid cyst is extremely rare in children. We report a case of a cardiac echinococcal cyst in an 1 1 year old boy, diagnosed by two-dimensional echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The cyst was located in the posterior wall of the left ventricle and was excised surgically. Echocardiographic and MRI findings are discussed. Key wordscardiac hydatid cyst, echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging.Echinococcosis is a predominantly hepatic-pulmonary disease. The heart is involved in on… Show more

“…However, it can lead to serious complications, such as ventricular arrhythmias, cardiac outflow obstruction, rupture, life threatening anaphylaxis, pulmonary embolism and cerebral embolism, cardiac tamponade and myocardial ischemia [9][10][11]. Serology for antibodies may be negative in 20% patients with hepatic cysts and nearly 40% with other cysts [8,12]. The definitive treatment of cardiac hydatid is surgical excision or marsupilization of cyst along with pre and postoperative albendazole therapy.…”

“…Therefore, it should not be forgotten that patients with cardiac hydatic cyst are often asymptomatic. [10,11] Although cardiac HCD is generally asymptomatic, since serious complications can occur, and rupture of cyst wall may cause sudden death, definitive treatment for cardiac hydatid cyst is surgery. Surgical mortality for cardiac hydatid cyst reportedly ranges between 0.29 and 0.6%.…”

“…12) Cardiac hydatid cysts account for 0.02-2% of all hydatid cysts, 55-75% are localized in the left ventricule, 15-18% in the right ventricle, 5-9% in the interventricular septum, 3-4% in the right atrium, and 2% in the interatrial septum. 1,9,11) According to the published literature, hydatid cysts localized in the interatrial septum are generally diagnosed during the autopsy of a rupture or mortal arrhythmia, during venous cannulation in open heart surgery, or during exploration of massive pulmonary emboli. [1][2][3] In our case, a hydatid cyst located in the interatrial septum was detected after surgery on an intracranially localized hydatid cyst and during exploration for a second focus.…”
