This study aimed to investigate the effects of celiac disease (CD) on cardiac function in children by using conventional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE). Forty-nine patients diagnosed with CD were enrolled into the study. Group 1 consisted of 26 (53%) patients who had recently been diagnosed and had not been on glutenfree diet whereas Group 2 consisted of 23 (47%) patients who had been on regular gluten-free diet for at least 10 months. 20 healthy children were enrolled into the study as the control group. The deceleration time (DT) and the left ventricle (LV) isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT) were significantly shorter in Group 1 compared to Group 2 and the control group (p=0.002, p=0.015). Mitral valve E/E' ratio was significantly lower in Group 1 and 2 when compared to the control group (p<0.001). The study demonstrated that evaluation of these parameters by using TDE could be beneficial in the early diagnosis of cardiac involvement in children with CD.

Freshwater oligochaetes are studied worldwide because of their relevance as bioindicators in aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, species identification is still difficult because it is mainly based on the male reproductive system. The morphology of the chaetae offers an additional set of characters and the fine organization of these elements can help in solving crucial aspects allowing specific attribution. In spite of this, somatic chaetae are poorly investigated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A SEM analysis of the chaetae has been carried out on the tubificids Branchiura sowerbyi, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Tubifex tubifex, and Psammoryctides barbatus from Trasimeno and Piediluco lakes (Central Italy). In particular, the chaetal pattern of B. sowerbyi is comparable to that described for specimens from the tropical regions of Asia, and T. tubifex shows the chaetal pattern typical of the nominal species; the palmate chaetae of P. barbatus are characterized by 15-20 fringes, each of them with a distal end thinner and folded backwards. In addition, B. sowerbyi is the dominant species in Lake Trasimeno, whereas it is lacking in Lake Piediluco, where the tubificids are primarily represented by T. tubifex.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in patients with myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy. Methods:Fifty-six patients between 1 and 18 years old with dilated cardiomyopathy or myocarditis were evaluated and followed up at Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira. Patients with previous diagnosis of celiac disease were excluded. The functional classification was determined according to the American Heart Association criteria (classes I, II, III and IV). Diagnosis of myocarditis was reported in the patients' medical records. Dilated cardiomyopathy was diagnosed by echocardiogram with systolic dysfunction of one or both ventricles, ejection fraction lower than 55%, ventricular dilatation, and left ventricular diastolic diameter bigger than 112%. Patients answered a questionnaire about gastrointestinal and cardiac symptoms; next, anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) and anti-endomysial (EMA) antibodies were dosed. Those with positive antibody results were referred to intestinal biopsy and histological evaluation to detect celiac disease according to Marsh classification. Results:One of the 56 children (1.8%) had positive tTG antibody level, but negative EMA. Intestinal histological evaluation showed total villous atrophy. Approximately, 30% of patients had heart failure. Gastrointestinal symptoms and signs were frequent, especially abdominal pain (70%, 39/56). Conclusion:Celiac disease prevalence in pediatric patients with dilated cardiomyopathy or myocarditis was 1.8%.
