Carcinoma in a Mixed Mammary Tumor in a Llama (Lama Glama)

Abstract: Abstract. A 13-year-old female llama was presented to the referring veterinarian for swelling and firmness of the right rear mammary gland, for a duration of 2 months, which had been unresponsive to antibiotics. A formalin-fixed wedge biopsy specimen from the affected quarter was submitted to Purdue University Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for histopathology. “…In fact, only one description of bone metaplasia is available for this group, associated, however, with severe skin lesions in a dolphin found entangled in fisher nets ( St. Leger et al, 2018 ). Bone metaplasia in mammals is mainly caused by tumors ( Kornegay et al, 1991 ; Sant'Ana et al, 2002 ; Bangari and Stevenson 2007 ; Kannegieter et al, 2010 ; Ramirez et al, 2010 ; Ohfuji 2012 ), followed by metabolic and eating disorders ( Han and Gardiner, 2016 ).…”

“…Neoplastic cells had distinct cell borders and scant, pale eosinophilic and occasionally finely vacuolated cytoplasm. The nuclei were round-to-oval with finely stippled chromatin and 1–4 nucleoli and moderate anisokaryosis; 8 mitotic figures were counted in 2.37 mm 2 (10 high power fields, 40× objective). Some lymphatics and blood vessels contained emboli of neoplastic cells.…”

“…19 In addition to bile duct carcinoma, other tumors that have been reported in llamas include metastatic pulmonary adenocarcinoma, 15 metastatic uterine adenocarcinoma, 9 malignant round cell neoplasia, 12 cutaneous metastases of a mammary carcinoma, 10 gastric squamous carcinoma, 18 retinoblastoma, 3 gemistocytic astrocytoma, 4 and carcinoma in a mixed mammary tumor. 2 Cholangiocellular carcinomas are malignant neoplasms of biliary epithelium, which usually arise from the intrahepatic ducts, but also extrahepatic bile ducts can be affected. Such neoplasms have been recorded in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses but less frequently than hepatocellular tumors.…”
