“…These considerations make it plausible to suggest that more than one cell type can give rise to carcinoids, some of which might in turn have the potential to develop into mucinous tumour cells. Embryologically, the common origin of basiglandular cells and mature goblet cells from the primitive entoderm (Azzopardi and Pollack, 1963;Clara, 1934;Dockerty and Ashburn, 1943;Gibbs, 1963;Masson, 1928 and1930;Stohr, Mollendorff and Goerttler, 1959) is consistent with this view.…”

“…The literature on gastrointestinal carcinoids is replete with examples depicting the existence of mucin-secreting adenocarcinomatous areas (Bates and Belter, 1967;Black and Haffner, 1968;Cordier, 1924;Dockerty and Ashburn, 1943;Gibbs, 1963;Hernandez and Reid, 1969;Horn, 1949;Lattes and Grossi, 1956;Pearson and Fitzgerald, 1949;Siburg, 1929;Stout, 1942;Toker, 1969). Adenocarcinomas of the alimentary tract have also been described which contain a few argentaffin cells (Azzopardi and Pollack, 1963;Gibbs, 1967;Hamperl, 1927;Lillie and Glenner, 1960;Masson and Martin, 1928).…”

“…Although jt is conceivable that the thecoma originated in the pluripotential tissue of the teratoma, it is reasonable to argue that the combination in the present instance is fortuitous. A well-recognized association with a dermoid cyst is that of pseudo-mucinous cystadenoma, which is an integral part of 10 per cent of cystic teratomas (Dockerty, 1945). Coincident solid mesenchymal tumours have also been described : Dockerty and Masson (1944) found a fibroma combined with a dermoid cyst, and Dockerty (1945) mentions an instance of a Brenner tumour in the tissues of a teratoma.…”

“…Spies emphasized that the tumour was a distinct entity and should not be confused with the adenoid cystic epithelioma of Brooks and Fordyce, and that it was different from adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma of mixed tumour type has also been used as a designation (New andChildrey, 1931 Watson, 1935), and adenocarcinoma of cylindroma type (Dockerty andMayo, 1942, 1943;Quattelbaum, Dockery and Mayo, 1946). The original term cylindroma has come back into faTour recently, and Lennox (1960) comments "I can find no better name than ' cylindroma ' for the group, though few members contain any cylindrical structures".…”
