Carcinoid tumor of the gallbladder: report of two cases

Abstract: We report two cases of carcinoid tumor of the gallbladder. Case 1 was a 59-year-old woman who presented with epigastric pain. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) revealed a 16 mm polypoid lesion in the neck of the gallbladder. Tumor markers were within normal limits. Open cholecystectomy was performed with a preoperative diagnosis of early cancer of the gallbladder. Case 2 was a 45-year-old man. A polyp in the gallbladder was incidentally detected on annual checkup. Ultrasound and CT showed … Show more

“…So that, the preoperative diagnosis of GB-NETs and GB-NENs generally is difficult because there are no specific symptoms, and the radiological results are no different from those of other gallbladder tumors [ 14 ]. A benign polyp could be the mode of discovery of NEN in 31.6 % of cases [ 15 , 16 ]. That is why, GB-NEN are often incidentally detected by routine histopathological examination of cholecystectomy specimen [ 14 ].…”

“…The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed a new category in 2019, wherein GBneuroendocrine neoplasms (GB-NENs) are divided into three categories, namely: NET (grade 1, 2, or 3 NETs), neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs, large cell or small cell type), and mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) [3]. However, such tumor behaviors and adequate treatment for this condition are still relatively unknown because this tumor is extremely rare [4,5].…”
