Carcinoid Tumor of the Esophagus

Abstract: Several case reports have emphasized that esophageal carcinoid tumors are associated with a poor prognosis. To expand our knowledge about the pathology and biologic behavior of these rare tumors, we reviewed the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings of four cases of primary esophageal carcinoid. The age of the patients ranged from 48 to 82 years (mean 63 years; median 61 years). The lower segment of the esophagus was involved in two cases and the mid segment was involved in one case. The sizes of … Show more

“…Most of the NENs arising from the esophagus are NECs, and NETs are rare (Hoang et al, 2002). Esophageal NENs commonly occur in the mid to lower segments of the esophagus (Hoang et al, 2002; Yun et al, 2007).…”

“…Esophageal NENs commonly occur in the mid to lower segments of the esophagus (Hoang et al, 2002; Yun et al, 2007). Esophageal NETs appear to arise in two ways: as an incidental finding in association with Barrett esophagus and adenocarcinoma or as a single large polypoid or nodular tumor (Hoang et al, 2002).…”

“…According to the organ distribution and frequency, pathogenesis and treatment modality can differ in terms of prognosis; therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of each organ through observation [1, 4]. However, NETs in the esophagus are exceedingly rare, and there have been no concrete data published on clinical features or prognosis [57]. …”

“…This is because the neuroendocrine system is not well developed in the esophagus [5]. Previously, one study reported on 8,305 NETs at different anatomical sites; however, only three (0.04%) were reported to be esophageal NETs [8].…”

“…Case reports describe a favorable prognosis in most subjects. Esophageal NETs may present incidentally as discrete polypoid lesions, or in association with adenocarcinoma in the setting of Barrett’s esophagus[10,11]. Low-grade carcinoid lesions have been described, and these have a good prognosis following resection.…”
