Carcass measurements, non-carcass components and cut production of local Brazilian Pantaneiro sheep and crossbreeds of Texel and Santa Inês with Pantaneiro

Abstract: This study aimed to assess and compare the non-carcass components, carcass measurements and meat cut production of Pantaneiro (P) sheep and their Texel (TP) and Santa Inês (SIP) crossbreds. Ninety-six lambs, of which 51 were male and 45 were female, with a mean weaning weight of 15.21 ± 1.25 kg and age of 78 ± 13 days were slaughtered at 32 kg of body weight. TP lambs had greater leg compactness and weight and percentage of pelt, whereas genotypes (G) P and SIP had higher carcass depth. P and SIP females had w… Show more

“…Purebred animals had a longer leg length and a longer chest depth than T × S lambs, which are characteristics of rustic breeds, compared to Texel crossbred lambs, which had a longer buttock perimeter and therefore a higher leg compactness index (G/F), as well as better conformation with leaner carcasses, 30 with such variables being typical traits of specialized meat-type breeds, in addition to a higher OS2 value, in agreement with other studies. “…1) showed that groups can be discriminated. The traits added in the first canonical variable are related with morphological characteristics and the performance results present in the articles by Vargas Junior et al (2014;2015). The addition of fatty acids in the second canonical variable improved the discrimination and characterization of the genotype groups.…”

“…The Pantaneiro sheep is a local sheep breed in Brazil under registration process. The main characteristics of the indigenous Pantaneiro sheep breed have been described elsewhere (Vargas Junior et al, 2015). It is mainly suited for lamb production in the Centre-West region characterized by a tropical climate with a dry winter season and rainy summer.…”
