Carboxylation of terminal alkynes promoted by silver carbamate at ambient pressure

Abstract: Simple and easily available silver and copper carbamates were investigated as catalysts for the carboxylation of terminal alkynes. Ag(O2CNMe2), combined with Cs2CO3, afforded propiolic acids at ambient CO2 pressure in satisfying yields.

“…[44] A solution of Ag(I) N-(2-ethylhexyl)-carbamate was synthesized based on published literature procedures. [43] The Ag precursor (96.8 g) was diluted in methanol to produce a solution comprising 1% Ag N-(2-ethylhexyl)carbamate (2.5 g); (3-mercaptopropyl) triethoxysilane (97%) and HDTMS (Figure 1) were obtained from Aldrich. The nonionic surfactant, octaethylene glycol monohexadecyl ether, was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich.…”

“…[38][39][40][41][42] Ag carbamate has been applied recently to produce fine Ag NPs without generating any residue of inorganic ions, by applying a simple thermally reductive procedure. [43] In addition, this technique needs only a short reaction period, and has improved selectivity, high rate, and rapid heating. In this context, a green and sustainable preparation was demonstrated for Ag NPs as antimicrobial agents, deposited onto the cotton surface to introduce a multifunctional fabric.…”

“…Thus, a systematic screening of the catalytic activity of homoleptic carbamates of silicon, tin and some d-transition metals for the CO2/epoxide coupling reaction was performed, in conjunction with tetrabutylammonium bromide as a co-catalyst, under solvent-free and ambient conditions [134,290,324]. Then, Ag(I), Cu(I) and Cu(II) carbamates were tested as catalysts for the carboxylation of terminal alkynes [325] and in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to propargyl alcohols [326] (Scheme 38). Interestingly, [Fe(O2CNR2)3] (R = Et, i Pr, Bn) revealed a promising catalytic activity for the production of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxides [324].…”

“…Basecatalysed carboxylation of terminal alkynes with CO 2 was successful, but relatively high temperatures and pressures (90-120 1C, 2.5-10 bar) or pre-activation of the alkynes were often required in these cases. [7][8][9][10] Transition metal catalysis, especially catalysed by complexes containing Ag, [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Cu, [18][19][20][21] and Mo, 22 is the mainstream of metal-based catalysis in this transformation. Basically, it is possible to obtain the target propiolic acids or propargylic esters in 70-94% yields using 1-10 mol% catalysts under atmospheric CO 2 with good tolerance of the substrates.…”
